This is likely to be Alaska’s coldest winter dating back to 64/65 or at least 68/69.
Winters are turning COLDER in Alaska in the last decade.
That’s also the reason why the arctic air hasn’t fully reached the lower 48. But now it’s back to above average in Fairbanks, so this will allow much colder air to filter into the lower 48 soon.

I think the energy in the outer atmosphere is migrating outward. The heat energy in the atmosphere rises and expands as air pressure decreases with increasing altitude.
